Unearthing the secrets of Georgia's 8,000-Year-Old Winemaking Heritage.

24/04/2023

With its winemaking history dating back to 8000 BC, Georgia is one of the oldest and most unique wine regions in the world. The country is actually home to over 500 grape varieties and a thriving wine industry. Despite its long history and unique winemaking traditions, Georgia's wine industry is still relatively unknown to many wine enthusiasts around the world.

A fun fact to remember is that early Georgians discovered grape juice that could be turned into wine by burying it underground for the winter. Some of the Qvevris (large earthenware vessels) that were buried, could remain underground for up to 50 years!

For many, wine might only be a commercial enterprise, but for the Georgians, it is a cultural and social activity that plays a central role in their daily life. The thousand-year-old winemaking practice of fermenting and aging wine in Qvevris is still used today by many Georgian families who produce their own wine.
